”Smelling can be intense, repellent, disgusting, powerfully fragrant, redolent, comforting. Smells create dense interactions between, say, memory and the environment, home, the comfort of another’s body. Some cultures have worked very hard to control the sources of strong smells: plumbing, the automobile and gardens are technologies that in part resulted from a desire to control assaults on the olfactory sense. So, in the spirit of interacting with the banished and the powerful let’s smell some things. Through a set of guided exercises, we’ll write alongside the smells of the garden, trying to focus our noses on both specific smells and on the riotous medley that comes our way.”
